Vor diesem Hintergrund lassen sich aus der durch Hypothermie und kardiopulmonalem Bypass veränderten zerebralen Homöostase theoretische Überlegungen zur möglichen Ursache neurologischer und neuropsychologischer Störungen ableiten. Mit diesem Buch wird erstmals eine systematische Studie über das Verhalten von Hirndurchblutung, zerebralem Metabolismus, EEG-Verläufen und postoperativer Inzidenz neurologischer/neuropsychologischer Symptomatik nach pulsatiler und nichtpulsatiler Perfusionstechnik in Verbindung mit Hypothermie vorgelegt. Das Kernergebnis aus dieser Untersuchung zeigt, daß ein nicht temperaturkorrigiertes Säure-Basen-Management während der extrakorporalen Zirkulation und Hypothermie für das Gehirn physiologischer ist und die Kopplung zwischen Hirnmetabolismus und Durchblutung unter diesen Bedingungen erhalten bleibt.
