Product Description
This book presents the concepts of statistical inference for students from non-mathematical backgrounds. Written at a level that appeals to those without a strong background in mathematics, and with its application and example-orientated approach, it is highly relevant to those in both academia and industry. The authors have included worked examples using S-Plus, with clear signposting to the use of other statistical software packages. Statistical Inference with Medical Applications has a dedicated website containing exercises, software code, solutions, overhead slides, and examples using Stata and SAS to reinforce learning.

Nowadays color images of objects are widely used in different scientific fields. There are many works related to the research of human skin color images for the color reproduction of color films and color television systems. Skin recognition becomes more popular topic to study. In the book the multispectral images of human skin for medical application are studied. The analysis of spectral images of skin using Independent component analysis is made. New methods for conversion of spectral images, which are studied by the ICA method, are obtained. Using the FastICA algorithm the independent components of skin are obtained, and some basic analysis of them is made.

Product Description
In recent years, both the diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries have begun to seek improved methods of reagent dispensing that would enable them to reduce the amount of reagent used, improve the accuracy and repeatability of the quantities dispensed, and generally expedite the processing of assays and microarrays. This work specifically presents the development of a piezo? actuated microfluidic dispensing system for microdrops generation with real-time closed-loop pressure control that can operate in a drop-on- demand mode using a non-contact liquid transfer method. This system can potentially generate droplets with very high accuracy up to several picoliters in order to generate very high-density microarrays. A simple mathematical model is developed and used in order to perform simulations that are utilized as a tool by which some of the system’s design parameters are optimized. Moreover, detailed finite element analysis was used in order to optimize the overall design, assess the performance of the system, and define suitable operating parameters.

Product Description
Since their discovery by Becquerel and Röntgen, ionising radiation and detectors for ionising radiation have played an ever more important role in medical diagnostics and therapy. The use of scintillating materials in the detection of ionising radiation for medical imaging is the main topic of this book intended for an audience of physicists and engineers. The book will be useful both to new researchers entering the field and to experts interested to learn about the latest developments.
It starts with an overview of the state of the art in using radiation detectors for medical imaging, followed by an in depth discussion of all aspects of the use of scintillating materials for this application. Possibilities to improve the performance of existing scintillating materials and completely new ideas on how to use scintillating materials are discussed in detail. The first 4 chapters contain a general overview of the applications of radiation detectors in medicine and present a closer look at the 3 most important subfields, X-ray imaging, gamma ray imaging and PET. One chapter is devoted to semiconductor detectors, a promising new area, and two chapters are devoted to recent technical advances in PET. The remaining 5 chapters deal with scintillating materials and their use in medical imaging.
