Product Description:
Clinical Nephrotoxins: Renal Injury from Drugs and Chemicals, Third Edition is a comprehensive text on all aspects of adverse effects by drugs, chemical substances and radiation on the kidneys. The importance of the toxicity of drugs and other substances for the kidneys is increasingly recognized. The book consists of themes such as clinical relevance, renal handling and cellular mechanisms of nephrotoxicity, as well as animal and cell culture models. In addition, the volume highlights specific types of drugs, such as anti-infectious agents and anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular and anti-cancer drugs. The last section deals with prevention and focuses on urinary biomarkers, pharmacological aspects and drug dosage in renal failure. In this third and completely revised edition, several new topics were added and additional figures and tables will be included.

Product Description:
The field of hemodialysis is subject to constant transformations due to continuous advances in techniques, biomaterials and devices. Based on international surveys, objective evaluations of experts and recent clinical trials, the publication at hand pays special attention to the physiological aspects of treatments as well as practical questions in the dialysis unit. Taking into account recent developments, an international group of contributors addresses issues related to vascular access, epidemiology, inflammation, fluid management, uremic toxicity, treatment efficacy, advanced techniques, calcium/phosphate homeostasis, and correction of anemia. Focusing on basic and clinical aspects of innovative technology as well as on new therapeutic options, this publication is a most helpful tool for the clinician to keep abreast of developments in the field of hemodialysis.

Product Description:
During the past 40 years there have been major conceptual and technical advances in the domain of dialysis methods and renal/organ transplantation for long-term treatment of patients with End-Stage Renal Failure (ESRF). This now enables better defined, more selective strategies of treatment to be undertaken, according to patient-specific criteria such as age or underlying renal disease also taking into account the lifetime duration of these treatments. For many patients this implies necessary successive changes of mode of therapy depending on their availability, occurrence of medical/technical complications or failure and social environment and economic factors. This rationale has inspired the structure of this volume which is divided into four sections: 1/A descriptive overview of the various modes of renal replacement therapy (RRT): Extracorporeal dialysis/filtration, peritoneal dialysis, kidney and multi-organ transplantation. 2/Most appropriate indications and use of these methods, respective advantages, drawbacks and outcome in children, pregnant women and elderly patients. 3/ In diabetic patients and in patients with heredity/congenital diseases.4/ The ethical issues generated by this new domain in Medicine by limitations in treatment facilities or medical dilemas for acceptance, best technical choices, withdrawal or termination of RRT in individual patients. Finally, contributors from Eastern European Coutnries, Africa and Far Eastern Countries analyse the current status of RRT in their respective geographical area and the ways and means required for a wider implementation of RRT in thus far lesser economically developed countries where the great majority of the populations still have no access to these life-saving therapeutic procedures.

Product Description:
All you need to know about vascular and peritoneal access techniques Recent developments have spurred a renewed interest in novel solutions to access the patient circulation, mainly concentrating on vascular access for renal replacement therapies and on peritoneal dialysis access. Starting with the epidemiology, the focus then shifts to the evolution of new techniques and monitoring procedures with regard to hemodialysis, which are discussed and evaluated. Attention is also paid to the new biomaterials available, concentrating on their improved biocompatibility and surface characteristics. As developments in the field of peritoneal dialysis have taken a similar turn, new devices providing access to the peritoneal cavity which have recently been made available are introduced next. Last but not least, the management of complications and the continuous maintenance and care of the access with regard to both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are highlighted. This book provides a complete overview of the devices, catheters and methods currently available to ensure successful vascular and peritoneal access. Taking into account both the physiology of the extracorporeal circulation and the mechanisms of peritoneal dialysis with regard to the most adequate access techniques, this is a unique resource for clinicians, investigators and researchers in the field of renal replacement therapy.
